Koubako Petite Treasure
Product Details
Chestnut wood from Japanese forests, shaped into a kitten in koubako pose. The Koubako Petite Treasure captures the gesture cats make when fully at rest: front paws tucked beneath the body, spine softly curved. Karimoku's woodworkers in Aichi Prefecture carve each figure from solid kuri, a hardwood prized in Japan for its warm grain and natural resistance to decay.
At 80 grams, the piece fits in an open palm. The proportions are considered rather than miniaturized. Ears angle forward with the alertness kittens carry even in stillness. The back rises in that particular arc of complete contentment.
Chestnut reveals its character slowly. The grain varies from piece to piece, meaning no two figures share identical markings. Some show pronounced annual rings. Others display the subtle vessel lines that distinguish kuri from lighter-toned woods. This is inherent to natural material, not a flaw to overlook.
The companion piece, sold separately, depicts an adult cat in the same pose. Displayed together, they suggest a quiet narrative. Alone, the kitten holds its own on a bookshelf edge or beside a reading lamp.
Karimoku packages each figure in a kraft presentation box. The finish requires only occasional wiping with a dry cloth. Indoor use only.
