The Hinoki Dream Cradle cat bed begins with solid oak, carved into a shape that sits between rectangle and ellipse. Karimoku's woodworkers in Aichi Prefecture developed this curved form specifically so cats can press their backs against the rim without encountering hard edges. The frame arrives fully assembled, requiring no tools.
Inside sits a cushion filled with tsubu-wata, a granulated fiber that recovers its shape after compression and allows air to circulate. The standard covers use water-resistant fabric that wipes clean. The walnut variant pairs with Kvadrat's Patio textile from Denmark, a material developed over three years to achieve water resistance without fluorinated compounds.
A feline veterinarian consulted on the design. The interior dimensions accommodate cats up to 25kg, though most will find it right-sized for one or two average companions curled together. The low 105mm profile works on windowsills for sunbathing, a habit the design explicitly accommodates.
The cushion lifts out and secures with ties to prevent shifting. Covers are machine washable in a laundry bag. Karimoku sells replacement cushions and covers separately, anticipating years of use rather than disposal.
Walnut develops deeper character over time as its tannins oxidize. Oak stays lighter. Neither finish tries to hide the wood grain.
